Nights Like This

It was a night like this when I smoked for the first time,
Nights like this, I've been drunk.
But I'm still here, with hope;
And faith, and will to overcome.

I look back and see my shadow,
But forward is the sun.
I've learned something on nights like this:
"Just keep moving on!"

Anthems For The Musically Challenged

  • Jan. 25th, 2009 at 11:39 PM

So there are three reasons for this project (Four if you want to count my love for music, but that's a reason for everything I do)

-My brother called my roommate "Musically Challenged" for not having heard of Iron Man

-There's this girl I know who basically has to ask her mother for permission to buy music- she heard me mention Avenged Sevenfold, so she ASKED if she could buy an A7X cd, and her mother listened to "part of a song" and "said it sounded like the Devil's music" (Which might be true) so she wasn't allowed to buy it. To me, this seems really bad... maybe it's just because music was such a major part of my upbringing... it wasn't shoved in my face, but whenever we drove places we would listen to Oldies 104.3, I had Turtles, The Who, and Abba when everyone else had N*Sync and Backstreet boys... The first Parental Guidance CD I bought, at 13 or 14, was Green Day's American Idiot, and I remember being so worried they wouldn't let my buy it because it had the Parental Guidance sticker on it. Music has shaped and changed who I am, and it makes me sad that someone's been stifled this badly, that as a freshman in high school, she's not even allowed to buy CDs. So part of this all goes out to her.

-Jade Puget, guitarist from AFI, posed this question on his blog a bit back : "When you make a mix for someone, it's usually a friend who might listen to many of the same bands as you, so it's hard to come up with the perfect songs because you don't want to include tracks that the person already has/knows, but you don't want to put a slew of mediocre b-sides on it and wind up with a boring mix either.
If you were making a mix of 10 songs for a person that had never heard....anything, what would they be?"

So I'm throwing that question back at you guys. This first playlist/ CD is basically going to be the Cliffs Notes (does anyone ever use that anymore, or is it Sparknotes now?) of Music Education, with a slight focus on Teenage Rebellion// Change and Moving On. If I get an overwhelming amount of songs for that list, I'll cut it down to the bones for Volume 1 and then do more volumes by decade. I don't want this to be Greatest Hits Of The 70s, by any means, but more.... I don't know, more meaningful shit.
I guess this whole entry was basically me asking....

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST IMPORTANT/INFLUENTIAL/BEST SONGS EVER (aimed generally at a teenager who's never heard anything except, let's say, Mozart and the Beatles?)

I entered this contest to sing on AFI's next album, and one of the factors is the number of votes my video gets. So I would greatly appreciate if you all could head over here :

http://begintransmission.afireinside.net/watch?v=fy1Errj6Z-w

Sign in (you can use your facebook info... or myspace info, or both and vote twice =]) and hit 5. You can also watch my video but it's kind of rediculous.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Whut.

8 Days of Happy: 1

Okay, so [info]myjadedhavok</lj> tagged EVERYONE on her friendslist for this meme, the 8 Days of Happy. (I'm tagging presents, hopelesswarning, imjustdifrent, asphyxiation77, vlad13351 oh, screw it, I'll tag everybody too. Everybody should be happy!)

The rules are like this: for 8 days, post one thing that makes you happy.

(For me this should be pretty interesting as in the next 8 days I'm going to be chilling on an island for a while then heading back to DC, with my PARENTS, for parents' weekend, and there's even a day of co-curriculum thrown in there. So we'll see how it goes.)

Day 1:  December 30.
Today, it makes me very happy that my schedule so far went like this:
-Wake up
-Change into bikini
-Sit on my deck in the sun
-Work out
-Eat brunch
-Change into other swimsuit
-Swim laps in pool.

Yeah, that's pretty happy-making. Nevermind what else will come, my 12:00-3:00 schedule was excellent.

THIS IS REALLY EXCITING:

The print versions of my novel were shipped yesterday, so they will hopefully be in my hands on Friday or Monday! OMGOMGOMG!!!!

In other news, over here at the MPAA my new title is Chief Intern in charge of Executive White Board Calender Decorating Decisions and Budget Busywork. (aka I spent the morning re-doing the white board calender and going through the budget)

Also, one of the more entertaining Memes you will see today:
WHAT'S GOING ON IN MY PANTS?
Put your music player on shuffle, type up the first 25 titles, adding "In my pants" to the end.

Actually, I'm wearing a dress ATM, so I don't have pants on... )

Winner.

Woooo!!!!

Finished my NaNo!!!
Also finished typing up Bill and I's epic text-a-thon from 4:30 to 5:30 this morning. Woooooo. We sent like 50 messages. (Starting, btw, with 'Fuckin oi' and ending with that 'love ya babe' crap.)

IMPORTANT!!!!- I just ordered 3 copies of my novel. One will be passed around school for edit-age, one will stay in my room, and I'd really like to mail the other one around for you all to read and comment on. If anyone's interested in that, please e-mail me your address to carnival.goth@gmail.com. It's a sort of realistic scifi novel about a 'perfect' town that's not so perfect after all, and features heroin withdrawal, innuendo, and a kid named Christopher.

And I am very sad about not being able to hang out with Emily and Joe. Angryface. It was a little out of my control.

Did go to another concert tonight, though, at the bowling alley. Armand and his army of Skanks were there but a couple of them were almost pleasant people except they didn't know the difference between a guitar and a bass. Whut. Blah blah blah singer hugs blah blah free t-shirt, blah, blah bassist full of energy blah blah Charlie and Peter Obstacles blah blah. Had to run home, 5 minutes late for curfiew oh f--k!  Sleep deprivation plus poor diet plus private bathroom equals lost ten pounds equals sickening-looking thing in the mirror, it's f--king emaciated, grossgross, I'm about 4 inches skinnier than Armand and that mofo is a SKELETON. And yes his skanks measure skinnyness in inches that's just because they're jealous or something. Oh my brain. Ohhhhh that brain of mine.

Date?? Tomorrow?!

Another of those inane iTunes shuffle memes, yoinked from... someone. )PS. The Lil Bill tag and the Meme tag are vying for second most popular tag in my journal; the first most popular tag is Holden, for Holden Caufield, as in The Catcher in the Rye, as in whiny, complain-y posts. That, plus my obsession with a certain punk boy and with answering questions about myself, makes it clear that I HAVE NO F--KING LIFE.

Oh I lied, actually, the Boys tag is between Holden and the tie-match. Because apparantly there are boys who aren't Lil Bill.

Best Audition piece for Colleges?

  • Oct. 16th, 2008 at 11:14 PM

I was trying to make a poll but it didn't work.

Which of these is the best audition piece for colleges? (I'd be applying to the Music Management thinghy, but because it's within the Music Program I have to audition! I'd be playing acoustic guitar and singing.)

-"Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Green Day-- I know it inside and out and can play it so it sounds GOOD. It's also emotional and has good lyrics. The downside is that it's a pretty damn simple song, and everyone knows it.

-"Swing Life Away" by Rise Against-- I know it rather well and can make it sound nice. The added bonus of being less popular and more complex.

-"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd-- I think this is an old audition standby, pretty popular. But it has a flashy little intro and I know it.

-"Ziggy Stardust" by David Bowie-- I don't know this song as well as the others, I'd have to practice more. But it's the most complex.

What are your first and 2nd choices? OR should I learn a new, more complex song? Help!

Movies

I'm really sick of being so Out Of It as far as movies are concerned.... Wanna help me out?

Here's some movies I've seen and enjoyed recently-- Almost Famous, Still Crazy, Wanted, Lord of The Rings, anything James Bond (I was a big fan of the one with Halle Berry), Catwoman, Fight Club, The Perfect Score. So movies about bands, action movies with explosions, hot female leads, et cetera.

(I STILL haven't gotten around to seeing Dark Knight... I wonder if it'll be in the Tivoli when I get home for a break... maybe I can go with some hometown palz)

Here are some movies that weren't to my taste: Saw, Monty Python. Basically stupid gory horror movies that are pointless, and lame British humor.

My 'To Buy' list is currently  Still Crazy and Spinal Tap.

I don't HAVE a To Watch list. Which is where you come in.
(I'm also very, very open to movies in French, but I don't think my f-list swings that way)
SUGGESTIONS?

Comment and I'll give you a letter.
Then you have to list ten things you LOVE that begin with that letter.
Afterward, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

[info]myjadedhavok gave me "R"

Rev, The, drummer for A7X
Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 66, song by A.F.I.
